Detox your wardrobe in 5 simple steps

Just imagine opening your wardrobe in the morning and everything is organised, there is plenty of choice; items that you don’t just throw on but are actually excited to wear. You then simply put together an outfit that you know will only need a change of shoes and a pop of colour on your lips that will be perfect for your dinner date later that night.

Doesn’t that sound great?

Even if you shop in a clever and calm way there will be times when a clear out is necessary to achieve this hard working wardrobe. No one wants to make cut throat edits you will regret, but at the same time, some things just have to go.

Rather than using a brutal and haphazard approach try asking yourself these simple questions designed to organise your thoughts and actions.

1. Does it fit me?

Arguably this most important one because if it does not fit there is no point keeping it, too big or too small, they are actually just taking up space that should be kept for something fabulous.

2. Do I wear it?

Some items are very seasonal (I am thinking of your swimmers and your puffa coats), however, if you are getting to the end of one season and you never reach for an item you are just as unlikely to wear it the next season so take the plunge and get it out of there.

3. Is it a ‘bit of me’?

Our best items are pieces of clothing that feel like home and not ones you have to constantly hitch up or pull down. Wearing something confidently, which you feel comfortable in, is always a winner. This includes removing items that were the ‘old you’ and no longer suit the life you lead.

4. Does it make me happy?

When you think of yourself wearing it, are you glowing? If it is a sequined jacket or a basic grey T-shirt it should bring you joy; from the touch of the fabric to the feel of it against your skin. This one is really important for people who rebuy the same item with a minimal variation, for example a wardrobe full of lots of black long-sleeve tops.

5. Is it versatile enough?

If you struggle to make any outfits out of an item of clothing it probably won't ever get worn. Maybe it is time to rehome these ones so that they work hard in someone else’s wardrobe.
